Did you know your air conditioner doesn’t just cool your home-it also removes humidity from the air? That moisture has to go somewhere, and that’s where your drain lines come in. Your system actually has 2 drain lines: a PRIMARY and a SECONDARY. Knowing which is which can help you catch problems early and avoid water damage.
Here’s how to tell them apart:
Primary Drain Line:
This is the main line that carries condensation away from your indoor coil.
You’ll usually see it on the outside of your home near the foundation.
When your system is working properly, and when there is humidity, this line should slowly drip water when the unit is running.
Secondary Drain Line:
This acts a backup if the primary drain ever gets clogged.
It is often located higher up on the wall above the primary drain.
If you ever notice water dripping from this line, it’s a warning sign that your primary drain is blocked and needs attention ASAP!
Red Beard’s Tip: Check your drain lines every month during the cooling season. If you ever see water dripping from the secondary line, shut your system off and give us a call! Catching early can save you from costly water damage and repairs!
